Historical
Scientists from Earth first discovered microscopic evidence of ancient life on Mars in 1996 (VOY: "Future's End, Part I"). Although there had been expeditions and probes sent to Mars for the previous three centuries, Mars was not first colonised until 2103. (VOY: "The 37's")

Geographical
Mars is considerably smaller than Earth. It is a cold, dead and icy world. There are many amazing sites on Mars, the most awesome is the volcano Olympus Mons, the largest mountain in Sol System.
Utopia Planitia
The Starfleet construction base Utopia Planitia is located on Mars where there is both orbiting and planet based facilities. The famous USS Enterprise-D was built here, amongst other ships.
